Day 34 - to Crawfordsville, IN

We got a tailwind!! Can’t explain how nice it was to have great weather! It was SO welcomed by all of us riding today. We also had a little shoulder for much of today’s ride which makes me feel safer.

Riding in the cities at the start and at the end can be a little chaotic. There’s always pot holes, traffic, turns, not to mention either trying to wake up or being tired from a hard ride. Today I did my best to lead us out of Champaign as smoothly as we could. Coming into town this afternoon went smoothly as the hotel was on the right and we are somewhat out of the city.

Danville^

We jumped onto a small bike path, it was not the actual route, but far too tempting as it followed us along the main road. We rode next to it for about 5 miles; we all decided to go for it. Well.. it turned to gravel and then proceeded to curve away from our route! lol oops. We got to ride over a cute bridge and enjoy the gravel for a few miles before we all found a cut through on a tiny street. Back on track.

Around mile 46 we had a road closure that added a mile or so to the route, but wasn’t bad. We found ourselves making really good time.. so a small group of us stopped at a roadside diner around mile 59. I had creamsicle shaved ice that really hit the spot.

Indiana is quite pretty. The small towns are so cute.. roads aren’t as busy as they were in Illinois. Weird that a short distance down the road from IL I could tell a difference. Not sure what the anti-solar power signs were about, that’s a new one not seen in over 2k miles. A few towns had murals and small art installations.

80 miles now feels “short” and “easy” in good weather. We think we will be lucky again for the next day to two days. We have a 75 mile day tomorrow, then 53, 105, 99, 90.. so I’m going to take in the extra time off and rest as best I can!

Riding over the Wabash River!
