Reaching for the Iron

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

The Flatiron hike in the Superstitions is one of our local favorites. Winter is the best time to check this one out, as it's exposed and no water on trail.

Flatiron, the start of the hike.

As we rev up our elevations gains in prep for our next Rim to Rim to Rim hike, tackling Flatiron is a perfect Phoenix go-to! The elevation gains are steep, no water, and you are hiking up or down hill.. very similar to the Grand Canyon. #RimtoRim prep!

Stats: 6.5 miles, 2,900 feet elevation gain, includes rock scrambling, small amount of climbing, and steep grades Alltrails reviews & info <--- here

I'm always surprised at how long this one takes us, just over 4.5 hours. Once on the hike you quickly realize why, the steep grade + boulder climbing on a single-track style trail leads to patience as fellow hikers take turns in a few sticking points. With that being said, it's still one of the more popular hikes in the valley of the sun!

You'll hear "The view is worth it, keep going!" throughout the hike. Don't turn around until you're on top of the formation, it's worth it!! (See video) #worthit

There are a few trail markings, some black X's and then a few white dots. There are some sections where there are multiple trails that lead back together. We tend to take these to help with traffic jams.

Mid-trail here.. Jodie pointing to the "Iron," where you hike to the top of!

Hiking with a pup? Dogs are allowed on the trails, but it has to be right dog for the boulder climbing. Even so, it is common to see people needing to hand up the dog, or carry it over tricky areas.

If you want to walk normally after this hike, prep workouts can include stairs, lots of stairs... lunges x 100 each leg and plank for 3 minutes. :)

Red is heart rate.. but check out the elevation profile!

If the temps are cooler, and you're looking for a view of the desert Southwest... check out Flatiron!
